Story Feedback

I’ve been following from an excited distance the opinions folks have rendered on “Paston, Kentucky”, ever since it first appeared in Murky Depths #1. I’m not used to accolades, but I can’t help but find gems like this enjoyable:

In “Paston, Kentucky”, Jonathan C. Gillespie gives us an exciting adventure about three men who are mankind’s last hope against an army of artificially-created drones who attack and eat anything metal.

Sam Tomaino, SFRevu

I’ve always been grateful for any honest feedback, negative or otherwise. Thanks to everyone who’s taken the time to review this publication’s first issue, and double thanks to those who spent words on my modest effort.

On an unrelated note, Halloween is coming up, and I feel like celebrating in true writer fashion. You won’t see shots of me in a costume on this site, but if you come back on All Hallow’s Eve, you might find a literary treat waiting for you on this blog.

Woot I say

I received my contributor’s copies of Murky Depths and have read a few of the pieces within.

Simply put, I echo sentiments that this magazine is a work of art. Everything has come beautifully together — the fusion of prose, poetry and graphic novel have blended to create an interesting hybrid that manages to easily hold one’s interest. The two runaway hits I’ve seen so far in my initial readings are Gareth D. Jones’ moving piece “Looking In, Looking Out”, and “The Other Woman”, by Chris Lynch, which manages to be emotionally involving and downright disturbing at the same time.

One of my favorite things about the mag is it does not demand an hour or more to finish each tale — many can be read in fifteen or twenty minutes, which lends the anthology a wonderful rapid-fire feel, and also makes it schedule-friendly to those of us with limited reading time in our lives.

In my humble opinion, this is the magazine to watch over the coming year.

Murky Depths is on its way!

I just received a heads-up from Terry Martin, aka editor of Murky Depths, saying that issue 1 is well and truly at the printers, and already interest is looming large. I’m not just trying to drum up interest in the mag because it has a tale from lil’ old me. Rather, it’s also because I bought the promo issue, and I can tell you the fusion of graphic novel and dark fiction that is this magazine is simply a damn good product. Terry and his hardworking team have managed to put out an excellent magazine, and I really hope you’ll come along for the ride in issue 1. This thing deserves to succeed.

On my writing front this week, it’s been kinda slow. I’ve maintained quota on my latest story, having completely dumped the prior format and gone to a different type of framework for the story. It’s coming along well. Other than that, I received one rejection — from Bane’s Universe, which turned down “Spired”. So it’s going back out today.
