#DS91sttime: Season 4, Episode 1 & 2, “The Way of the Warrior”

I spent a lot of time thinking how to express the excellence of Deep Space Nine‘s feature-length fourth-season opening episode, “The Way of the Warrior”, and the word that keeps fighting its way to the surface is Qapla’ (that’s Klingon for “success”). Its not that the Klingons own this episode, it’s that their arrival and its subsequent consequences force the crew to cooperate in a way that is compelling and gripping. You can’t watch this thing without being engrossed–it almost approaches First Contact with its thick air of escalating tension.

Pause on that for a moment: this is a season premiere of a syndicated Trek spinoff, and it warrants positive comparisons with First Contact. Read the rest of this entry →

Rom and Ishka, S3, Episode 23, “Family Business”

In the great ocean of the Trek universe, the Ferengi are so much flotsam, their culture so different from the obviously-honorable Klingons, the ever-conflicted Bajorans and the stalwart Federation. Sometimes, the franchise doesn’t know what to do with them. It’s a rare writer that treats them as anything other than a caricature of capitalism; a kind of uber-libertarian endgame so many believe would result if market regulations were relaxed. There are many fans that find the Ferengi just as horrible as the Cardassians. Then there’s the second camp, which I belong to, that adore the hidden depth they’re capable of when someone comes along and uses them the right way in an episode.

As I’ve said before, the Ferengi are so much more interesting when they’re not treated like clowns, or relentlessly-greedy thugs. I like it when the show gives their unique culture greater respect.

Reaction over new Rules of Acquistion in Season 3, Ep 16: "Prophet Motive"

Reaction over new Rules of Acquistion in Season 3, Ep 16: “Prophet Motive”

Whenever Deep Space Nine allows Ferengi the chance to be more than just punchlines, the result is often enjoyable, even deep–such as Quark’s wonderful admonishment of some of humanity’s past acts way back in “The Jem’Hadar”, or Nog’s drive to do more than just seek profit, which we saw just a few episodes back.

When the show reduces the Ferengi to caricatures, however, it’s a mixed bag. And, sadly, “Prophet Motive” milks this method to the point that it becomes tiring, while also managing to betray the air of mystery surrounding the wormhole’s inhabitant race, the Prophets. If I could choose the worst way for this enigmatic species to appear on the show, it would be this one.
